Frozen Dumpster Fixes

Let’s face it, nobody likes to take the trash out in the weather. This is true for home and businesses alike. It’s easy to let certain things go when you and/or your employees are in a rush to get inside. Here are a few things to keep your eye on to ensure your trash and/or recycling gets picked up in its usual manner.

Prevent Snow and Ice Buildup

Often, the dumpster area is the last area to be cleared in a place of business. It is important to remember to clear your gates and corral area (if you have one). If the gates can’t open wide enough, the dumpster(s) can’t be emptied. It’s also good to make sure that the drive leading to the dumpster is free and clear of snow and ice. The weight of the dumpster truck compacts the snow into a thin sheet of ice, resulting in a safety hazard for you and our drivers.

Corral Gates Need to Open

For those that have a dumpster corral with doors, it’s important to remember that the corral pins which hold the doors closed can freeze. Once frozen, the corral pins are nearly impossible to break free. To help ensure your trash gets picked up, place salt around the pins to keep them loose.

The Importance of Keeping Lids Closed

In wet and icy weather conditions, garbage bags can freeze to your dumpster. When this happens, it makes it hard for our drivers to dump it completely as the bags get stuck. If you keep your lids closed consistently, that can prevent this from happening-making it a breeze for your driver to get your dumpster(s) emptied.
