Is it safe to throw fireworks in the trash?
The short answer? Yes- but it’s important to follow these steps to make sure you do so safely.
- SOAK!
Take any and all fireworks (used or unused) that you’re wanting to dispose of and completely submerge them into water. Soak them overnight. - WRAP!
Once your fireworks are thoroughly wet, place them in a ziplock baggie to keep in the moisture- you don’t want them drying out! - DISPOSE!
Now that they’re all wrapped up, it is safe for you to throw them out in your everyday garbage can. DON’T recycle! Throw those babies away!
If you have any unused fireworks that you don’t want to throw away, make sure to store them in a cool, dry place, away from any electronics and appliances.
Why It’s Important to Take These Steps
While fireworks aren’t used often enough to cause major environmental concerns, special precautions still need to be made when disposing of them. They are made of harsh chemicals, metals, and fuels. If they aren’t disposed of properly, there is a chance they could leak into the ground water, where they can do the most damage.
Fireworks are a LOT of fun, and are great for Holidays like the 4th of July. Keep these tips in mind while having fun so you can do so safely.
