How to Retire an American Flag

American Flags should always be treated with honor and respect. They not only represent us and our country, but also all those who have fought and sacrificed their lives for our rights and freedom. As the years go by and your flag becomes tattered and worn, it is important to know while there are a few preferred methods to properly retire your flag, throwing it in the garbage is NOT an option.

The United States Flag Code states: “The Flag, when it is in such condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” While this is the preferred method, it is not always the safest one!

If there is no fire ban, feel free to follow these steps to retire your American Flag:

  1. Build a medium sized bonfire away from any trees and buildings
  2. Clear away any debris (this is not only a safety hazard, but can also be disrespectful towards the flag)
  3. Fold the flag, preferably in the ceremonial triangle. Make sure to handle it with care and not to let it touch the ground.
  4. Place the flag in the fire while it is burning strongly, but not too strong where it will throw embers. Make sure NOT to do this on a windy day!
  5. Either stay until the fire is completely out and nothing but ash remains, or put it out yourself once the flag is completely burned

Note: Do NOT burn your flag if there is a burn ban, or if it is made from polyester or nylon. The smoke would contain toxic fumes that can harm your lungs. If burning your flag is not an option, you can either bury it or take it to a local donation center.

Some places that accept your retired flag for donation are:

  • Your local fire department
  • Ace Hardware
  • Your local VFW
  • Post 40 also accepts flags for disposal. There is a drop off in the side parking lot in 1 of the sheds.

While it is important to treat our Flag with respect, it is also important to keep in mind how to do so safely. So fly those flags high and remember everthing that they stand for!
